Location and Size
The capital city of Wales, Cardiff is located to the south of the country at the mouth of the River Severn. Although the city is one of the largest in the UK it is actually one of the smaller European capitals, as well as one of the newest. Just 300km from the UK capital, it makes Cardiff a popular choice for students and tourists from across the South in particular.
Culture
There is plenty of historic and artistic culture in Cardiff. The major attractions being Cardiff Castle, the National Gallery of Wales, the Millennium Centre and the historic dock area, which has enjoyed extensive renovation. Cardiff is also home to what’s thought of as the oldest record store in the UK and is also the birthplace of Shirley Bassey.
Cardiff’s rich mix of shopping, sights, museums and culture attracts some 18 million tourists yearly. With a notable percentage of the population also speaking Welsh, it is an attractive option for foreign students.
Sports
Cardiff is arguably known best within the rugby world where sports are concerned. Not only is it home to the Cardiff Blues, but the city is also the home venue for the Welsh national team. Playing at the Cardiff Millennium Stadium, the Welsh team are cheered on by around 74,000 fans.
