Located in Surrey, Guildford is one of the most expensive locations outside of London when looking to buy property. This in largely down to its location, it marks the half way point between central London and the South coast town of Portsmouth. History and Culture

Guildford is a historic town, built around the remains of a castle dating back to around 1086 shortly after the invasion of William the Conqueror. Parts of the castle can still be seen today and its grounds are one of the most picturesque parts of the town when the sun is shining. It also has its own cathedral and is situated close to the Surrey Hills, an area of outstanding beauty. The River Wey runs through the heart of the town providing the setting for two of Guildford’s largest theatres, the Electric Theatre and Yvonne Arnaud Theatre.

Guildford also provides a mix of nightlife with a number of pubs, bars and clubs open throughout the week. Its cobbled high street is also home to a wide variety of shops, as well as the Tunsgate and Friary shopping centres, the latter having just undergone extensive renovation.

Getting Around

The town centre can be covered on foot from top to bottom in around 15 minutes but there are also a number of bus routes that service the town and surrounding areas. There are two train stations located in Guildford. Guildford Main provides high speed links to Woking, London and further West. London Road provides a slower line to London via Cobham and Stoke D'abernon. Guildford’s accessibility when commuting to London is a major influence in demand for property in the area and a driving factor behind people looking to buy a house in the town.

Schools in Guildford

Guildford also boasts a wide variety of schooling. The Royal Grammar School for boys is located at the top end of the town centre and is one of the most prestigious schools in the country. Guildford High and Tormead are both private all girls’ schools located slightly further out from the town centre. A ten minute drive outside of Guildford town centre in Merrow is St Peters Catholic Comprehensive and George Abbot. Both secondary schools that achieve highly in sporting and academic areas and educate children from the whole Guildford.

Guildford is also home to Surrey University, located a short walk from Guilford Main train station. The university specialises in science, engineering, medicine and business and recently launched the Surrey International Institute with Dongbei University of Finance and Economics in China.
