Location

One of the main boomtowns of the Industrial Revolution, experiencing rapid growth off the back of its huge cotton and textile industries, Oldham is a large town in Greater Manchester with a population of 99,000. At its height, Oldham was the world's most productive cotton spinning mill town.

Culture in Oldham

Oldham Coliseum Theatre, dating back to 1885, is a delightful-looking venue. Considered to be the true home of the traditional English pantomime, it puts on a new production every Christmas to audiences both young and old. Refurbished in 2012, it has a 524 seat auditorium and produces eight in-house shows a year, as well as comedy, talks, live music and plays from a wide range of touring companies.

Oldham Theatre Workshop, on the other hand, is a great place for kids and the local community to get involved in theatre. Well-known TV faces such as Suranne Jones, Sarah Lancashire and Anna Friel were all once members. The town's fine theatrical tradition is continued at the Lyceum Theatre, a small, intimate venue and home to the Lyceum Players, who put on five main productions each season.

Things to do in Oldham

The annual Oldham Carnival has been going since 1900 and is a fantastic day out for the whole family. In the last few years the carnival has been paired with the RootZ Festival, which showcases an eclectic range of music from all over the world. Reggae bands, music and dance acts, children-friendly activities, a funfair, food, ice cream, charity stalls and much, much more. Best of all, it's free!

For the arts, the Gallery Oldham is a free public art gallery in the town's Cultural Quarter. Sparse, minimalist, contemporary, the Gallery Oldham has four large exhibition spaces and a community gallery, plus a small cinema and various activities for kids and families.

Student Life in Oldham

University Campus Oldham – a partnership between the University of Huddersfield and Oldham College – has a number of degree courses, top up degrees, scholarships and teacher training services. As well as this, Oldham is the home of many students who choose to live outside of Manchester and commute in (only half an hour by car) to the city's various higher education establishments.

Buying in Oldham

Good transport links and good local amenities make Oldham a popular commuter hub. Manchester is a stone's throw away, while Oldham is a good base from which to explore the Lake District, Chester and the Yorkshire Dales. Green space is everywhere – none better than the beautiful Alexandra Park – and there is a great selection of country pubs, bars and restaurants in the town centre and its surrounding areas. All this, plus a cheap as chips average asking price make Oldham a very popular buying destination.
