Southampton is a large coastal city on the south coast of England. It is the largest city or town in Hampshire and is just 75 miles south west of London. The major port is also located close to the New Forest.

History of Southampton

Southampton has a rich history with archaeological findings suggesting the area has been inhabited since the Stone Age. As a major port Southampton is also associated with the RMS Titanic and played a large roll in WWII, as a launching point for the D Day Invasion as well as being associated with Spitfire. Southampton was granted city status in 1952 after a Royal Charter upgraded the University College at Highfield to the University of Southampton.

Education in Southampton

Southampton is home to a number of higher education institutions, more notably the city’s two universities. The University of Southampton and Southampton Solent both draw students from all over the UK, including the Isle of Wight, Jersey and Guernsey, who come to study in the city. This makes it a desirable location for those looking to invest in a buy to let property.

Getting Around Southampton

With most major cities, Southampton is well served by a well-developed transport infrastructure. As well as being a major port offering travel by sea to a number of locations, it also has a small airport offering flights to a number of locations. The M27 motorway also links the city to other locations along the south coast such as Bournemouth and Portsmouth as well as linking the city to the M3 motorway and a direct route to London. It is also well served by rail links providing a service to the capital in under an hour and a half.
