Southampton has a rich history with archaeological findings suggesting the area has been inhabited since the Stone Age. As a major port Southampton is also associated with the RMS Titanic and played a large roll in WWII, as a launching point for the D Day Invasion as well as being associated with Spitfire. Southampton was granted city status in 1952 after a Royal Charter upgraded the University College at Highfield to the University of Southampton.
